MacKay Concert Series: Fauré: Friends and Foes
On Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 7:30 pm, the MacKay Concert Series welcomes back pianist Dr. Maria Guénette in a solo recital of late nineteenth century French music. MacKay concertgoers may remember Maria’s exciting performance in 2010 with Robert Crutchfield on marimba as part of our piano fundraising concerts.
Her upcoming program is entitled Fauré: Friends and Foes. The title refers to a period in French musical history when there was a lot of discussion in musical quarters about promoting French music that would be distinct from the “national” music movements that were evolving elsewhere in Europe. Not everyone agreed on what that should mean.
However, the creative disagreements among the talented composers produced a rich legacy of musical achievement that Maria Guénette will bring to life for our listening pleasure. The program will include the following works: Valse-Caprice No. 1, Op. 30 (Fauré), Suite Op. 90 (Saint-Saëns), Menuet Antique (Ravel), Fantasie pour piano sur un vieil air de ronde française, Op. 99 (D'Indy) and Eglogue Op. 3 (Franck).
Tickets for Fauré – Friends and Foes ($25 for adults and $20 for seniors and students) will be available at Books on Beechwood, the Leading Note on Elgin Street, or through MacKay United Church (613-740-8727) and at the door. Concert time is 7:30 pm.
